10 Things to Do in Federal Way this Winter

Winter is notorious for its dreary, wet weather in Federal Way, but you don’t have to let that stop you from getting out and enjoying the season to the fullest.

Although your independent living campus offers a range of enjoyable activities and programs on site, it can be beneficial mentally and physically to get away for a few hours and experience the numerous attractions in Federal Way and the surrounding area.

From day trips and scenic drives to a night on the town or holiday events, there is plenty to do in Federal Way during the winter. Whether you are looking for an outing to enjoy with friends or entertainment that is suitable for the whole family, these Federal Way activities can get you out and about, regardless of the weather.

Fun Things to Do in Federal Way

1. Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center

The Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center (WKCAC), a legacy venue of the 1990 Seattle Goodwill Games, is the perfect way to engage in physical activity during the rainy winter months. The WKCAC, which features a recreational pool with a pirate cove theme, is open to the public for lap swims and family swims – ideal if you are looking for an activity to partake in with young grandkids.

2. Federal Way Performing Arts and Event Center

If you enjoy performing arts, check out the special events and activities taking place at the Federal Way PAEC. For the 2019 holiday season, the PAEC is bringing “A Charlie Brown Christmas Live on Stage” and “Christmas With the Nelsons,” in addition to other concerts and presentations that are open to the public.

3. Federal Way Community Center

The Federal Way Community Center, located on the southern end of Celebration Park, is a popular hub for activities and events that are suitable for people of all ages and abilities. The center includes a public recreational pool complex, a climbing pinnacle, and an indoor track. They offer a hot lunch program on Fridays, along with a full schedule of activities, classes, contests, day trips and special events. You can stop by the center to play bingo, bridge, pinochle, chess and cribbage, or relax by the fireplace in the Forest Lounge.

4. Century Theatres

What better way to take advantage of a cold winter afternoon or evening than with a trip to the movies? Century Theatres, located in The Commons at Federal Way, has showings of multiple movies and is known for its comfortable, clean environment. You can purchase popcorn and treats from the snack bar and settle in for a quality cinematic experience.

5. The Commons at Federal Way

As the only indoor shopping center in the city, The Commons at Federal Way also serves as a suitable destination for a winter outing. The shopping mall has dozens of retailers, restaurants, and service establishments, such as beauty salons, and occasionally offers special events, including Family Night on Dec. 5. If you are looking for a one-stop-shopping experience in Federal Way during the winter, The Commons is the place to go.

6. Centerstage! Theatre

Centerstage! Theatre in Federal Way has a full repertoire of shows and events throughout the year. Catch a musical version of “Robin Hood,” by Vince Brady, from Nov. 30 to Dec. 22, 2019 or the poignant romantic comedy “Let There Be Love,” by Mrinalini Kamath, in February of 2020.

7. Tacoma Art Museum

If you’re up for a short drive, head to the Tacoma Art Museum, which recently added a new Benaroya Wing. The regional museum, which emphasizes art and artists from the Northwest and broader western region, hosts a variety of exhibitions and collections. You can peruse the American art, Japanese woodblock prints, and European Art included in the museum’s legacy collection and also attend learning programs and other events throughout the week.

8. Pinot's Palette

Pinot’s Palette, a national brand that has a location in Federal Way, offers much more than just wine and painting – although that combination makes for a fun night out in the winter. Pinot’s Palette also hosts knitting events and freestyle afternoons. They serve a delicious menu of food specifically tailored for Pinot’s Palette and their bar is stocked with local wine, beer, and nonalcoholic beverages. You can attend a session for a unique experience and leave with a piece of artwork to keep or give to a loved one.

9. Wild Waves Theme and Water Park

While a water park may not sound like the most appealing option for a winter activity, the Wild Waves Theme and Water Park is transformed into a dazzling display of more than a million lights during the month of December. You can visit Toyland, make holiday crafts, take photos with Santa Claus, or join Frosty the Snowman and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer in a festive singalong nightly. Meanwhile, the park’s more than 25 amusement rides and attractions are all illuminated in lights for a magical experience.

10. Secoma Lanes

Spend an afternoon bowling at Secoma Lanes in Federal Way. While prices are already fairly low, seniors can get an additional discount on games during select days and times. The bowling alley also includes a lounge and restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.
