Comparing Independent Living Floor Plans in Des Moines, WA

Posted by Jason Kitchel on Apr 9, 2020 2:53:00 PM

Picking the right independent living community is just the first step in planning your retirement. Once you’ve selected the facility that will support the lifestyle you desire, you get to choose your specific accommodations.

Cottage or Apartment Comparing Independent Living Floor Plans

All retirement home floor plans at Federal Way independent living communities are designed with seniors in mind in terms of their accessibility and functionality. However, not every person possesses the same needs and preferences, and senior living options also encompass diversity to satisfy those differences.

You have the option to choose between a cottage or apartment senior housing floor plan at Village Green. Each option has something unique to offer and choosing the best one for you or your loved one comes down to evaluating the different features and perks.

#1 - Senior Cottages

The Birch - 3 Bedroom Cottages Independent Living Floor Plan

Free standing senior cottages within independent living communities near Federal Way, Tacoma or Normandy Park give you a sense of privacy, seclusion, and personalization similar to living in your own house. Cottages include yards and one- or two-car garages with electric door openers. There are several different cottage floor plans, including one-story and two-story models. You can choose a model with the number of bedrooms and bathrooms that fit your needs.

There is ample storage throughout each cottage so you won’t have a problem finding places for all your personal belongings, decorations, and furniture. Each one comes equipped with its own washer and dryer, as well as a connected deck or patio for relaxing and entertaining guests.

Because senior cottages are larger, they are typically $200 to $800 more expensive than apartments, depending on the overall square footage.

#2 - Senior Apartments

However, not every apartment unit is the same, giving you latitude for choosing the perfect fit for your needs and preferences. In fact, Village Green Retirement Campus has 21 senior apartment floor plans, ranging from 508-sq.-ft. studio apartments to 1208-sq.ft. two-bedroom apartments.

Like the cottages, many apartment units are equipped with a full-sized washer and dryer and access to a deck or patio. You also still have the ability to customize the space so it feels like home to you. Apartments, however, do not come with covered parking or a personal garage as cottages do.

If you reside in an apartment at Village Green, you are located significantly closer to the dining room and Fairfield building, where many of the community’s group activities and events are held. This means apartment-dwellers do not have as far to walk to eat meals and socialize.

Each distinctive senior housing option has its perks, which empowers you to select the one that is most suitable for you. The best place to start when considering these options to finalize your retirement home plan is to ask yourself the following questions:

  • How much space do you need? Would a smaller space help you downsize?
  • Which features do you need or would you like?
  • What is your retirement housing budget?
  • How close to do you want to be to campus facilities?
  • How much would you like to customize your residence?
  • Do you enjoy having neighbors directly next door or do you prefer some space?

Other than the aforementioned differences between cottages and apartments, both senior living options include the same community amenities in their overall rental rate. That means, regardless of which option you choose, you can enjoy a full activities program, scheduled transportation, beautiful garden areas, pleasant walking paths, and daily meals at the dining room.

You also will have access to the same services, including:

  • Weekly housekeeping with a bed change
  • Interior and exterior building maintenance and yard care
  • Paid utilities, including water, sewer, garbage, and basic cable TV
  • Fire and life safety systems
  • An emergency call system
  • Two non-intrusive well-being checks each day

Assessing Your Senior Housing Options

Before coming to a decision for yourself or a loved one, make sure to fully discuss each option with the staff at the independent living community you’ve chosen in the Federal Way area, including the cities of Normandy Park, Des Moines, and Tacoma. The team at Village Green can show you examples of their numerous senior housing floor plans for both cottages and apartment, or even take you on a tour of the campus so you can get a better sense of the various housing options and where they are located in terms of other campus amenities and facilities.
