There is a saying in dementia care that if you know one person with Alzheimer’s Disease, you know one person with Alzheimer’s Disease. The label tells you a lot, but sometimes it doesn’t tell you the most important thing—how does this person continue to connect with loved ones, how is the person living today?
In a sense, the same thing can be said of assisted living facilities. Every facility is similar, but each can be simultaneously very different. At Village Green Retirement Campus we work hard to be exceptional.
It’s typical, if not universal, for assisted living facilities to offer residents a private apartment with a bedroom, living area, bathroom and kitchenette, and then provide common areas for communal dining, activities and socializing. Staff provide assistance as needed with personal care, from grooming and hygiene to monitoring medications. Those are the basics.
At Village Green, we go beyond that in an effort to create a true community of residents who still have a lot of living left to do.
In this digital age, we talk about hardware and software, the hardware being the systems that allow the software to do what you need it to do. At Village Green, our facilities are the hardware and our people are the software, so to speak.
First, the hardware. Restaurant-style dining rooms, a fitness room, physical therapy, swim spa and hot tub, a massage suite, libraries, a pool table, card rooms, a movie theater, a solarium/craft room, a non-denominational chapel, a computer lab, 24-hour coffee and juice bar, emergency pull cords in every room and an emergency call system with a wireless pendant. When out-of-town family members or friends arrive for a visit, we even have guest rooms available for their stay.
Plus, we are pet friendly!
I’m not sure if this is an “amenity” or a core value, but Village Green is fortunate to be situated in a beautiful location that has been enhanced by the incredible talents of our landscaping crew. The reason this is important is that study after study has shown the tremendous physical, emotional and spiritual benefits of spending time outside. Too often as seniors age they spend more and more time indoors, in part because of mobility issues, but also because of safety concerns or motivation.
At Village Green our walking paths are well-lit and free of obstructions. Whether residents want a long walk or a short one, there are benches located along the path that offer a place for silent reflection or a place for walking partners to sit and visit.
Avid gardeners—or novices who have always wanted to give it a try—will enjoy our personal gardening spots with irrigation. For those looking for high-value with low-investment, a personal Pea Patch might be just the thing.
All of that “hardware” sets the stage for our residents to be able to live rich, engaged, meaningful lives, but our caring and compassionate staff make the Village Green experience truly distinctive. You don’t have to take my word for it. Come for a tour, meet our staff and talk with some of our residents.
